The story
“I always thought love was an illusion,” says brainy, guarded college student Mike. He’s not lonely, just always alone — by choice. But then he meets Hannah, and she turns out to be the perfect person to be alone with.
As college graduation approaches, Mike and Hannah’s classmates may be stressing about what to do with their lives, but Mike and Hannah have it all figured out.
She’s going to med school to fulfill her lifelong plan of becoming a doctor. And wherever she goes, he’ll come too. Happily ever after.
Mike’s jaded professor tells him he’s making a big mistake. He should focus on his own career and have “epic life experiences,” which he can’t do if he’s following his girlfriend around.
But Mike believes he and Hannah are already fulfilled. He’s all for having epic life experiences, so long as he can share them with her.
On a fateful trip home for Christmas break, Mike’s prepared for the usual downers: two weeks of celibacy in their childhood homes and lots of time with Hannah’s Facebook-perfect, insanely overbearing parents.
As self-professed “cool dad” Jake and Insta-glossy mom Ellie smother and infantilize Hannah, Mike struggles to maintain their equilibrium.
Then a chance encounter kicks off a chain reaction that rattles the foundation of Mike and Hannah’s idealized world.
As revelations unfold, Mike and Hannah begin questioning everything they know about adult life, relationships and each other.
Mike begins to wonder: How far can you bend for someone you love… until you break?
